Small books are hard to write well
Fewer words means every one has to work.
A picture book is usually under a thousand words, read aloud, many times, by a tired adult to a child who notices everything. Rhythm, repetition, page turns and the relationship between text and image all matter. Our writers and illustrators plan the book as thirty-two pages from the start, so the story, the art and the layout are designed together.
How a children’s book comes together
Story and age group
We agree the audience, the format and the message, then develop or refine the text.
Characters and style
Illustration style references and character sketches you approve before final art.
Storyboard and layout
Text placed page by page against rough illustrations, so pacing is right before painting begins.
Final art and files
Finished illustrations, cover and print- and ebook-ready files, with proofs before publication.
Common questions
Do you provide illustrators?
Yes. Illustration is matched to the style you want, from soft watercolour to bold digital art, and you approve character designs and sample spreads before final artwork begins.
What size and format should a children's book be?
It depends on the platform and audience. Common print-on-demand sizes include 8.5 x 8.5 inch square and 8 x 10 inch portrait; we advise on trim size, page count and paper once we know where the book will be sold.
Can you publish a children's book in Australia?
Yes. We prepare files for Amazon KDP, IngramSpark and other platforms, guide you through ISBN requirements and help with metadata, categories and age ranges.
